DSIP and 24-hour sleep-wake behavior: an early positive study in context

An earlier small trial reported improvement, illustrating the mixed historical record.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Fourteen middle-aged people with severe chronic insomnia were studied under double-blind, placebo-controlled conditions. Measurements included laboratory sleep recordings and tests of daytime psychological state and performance.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The authors reported improvements in nighttime sleep and daytime alertness or performance during the experimental period. Some changes persisted into the first post-treatment observation night.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The very small sample and limited follow-up require caution. This publication predates the later 16-participant DSIP trial with weaker findings; the studies should be read together rather than selecting only the positive report. The results do not establish modern clinical effectiveness or a personal-use protocol.
