GHK-Cu and MMP-2: matrix remodeling includes turnover

The study examined matrix-degrading enzymes and their inhibitors, not simply collagen accumulation.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Researchers investigated cultured dermal fibroblasts and measured MMP-2 in conditioned media, messenger RNA and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases. They compared the complex with copper ions and GHK without bound copper.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

GHK-Cu increased MMP-2-related measurements and secretion of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2. Copper ions reproduced part of the response, whereas GHK alone did not. The results suggest that matrix turnover and copper chemistry are important to the observed pattern.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

More of a remodeling enzyme is not automatically beneficial tissue repair. These were cell-culture measurements, not clinical outcomes. The differences between copper-bound and unbound peptide also caution against assigning the same properties to chemically different materials.
