STEP 2: weight outcomes in adults who also had type 2 diabetes

The diabetes population makes this a different question from STEP 1.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

This randomized, double-blind phase 3 trial assigned 1,210 adults with overweight or obesity and established type 2 diabetes to semaglutide study groups or placebo. Follow-up lasted 68 weeks and included lifestyle intervention.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The primary comparison showed greater weight reduction with the investigated semaglutide formulation than placebo. The trial also examined the proportion reaching a prespecified weight-loss threshold and monitored adverse events.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The result concerns adults with diabetes and specific baseline glucose-control criteria. It should not be treated as an independent estimate for people without diabetes or compared casually across trials. Study formulations and monitored treatment cannot be equated with catalog research materials.
