STEP 8: semaglutide versus liraglutide in an active-comparator trial

The head-to-head comparison adds information that separate placebo trials cannot provide.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

A 68-week randomized trial enrolled 338 adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes. The active semaglutide and liraglutide comparison was open-label, while matched placebo comparisons were blinded. Lifestyle counseling accompanied the interventions.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Average body-weight reduction was greater in the semaglutide active group than in the liraglutide active group. The publication also compared weight-loss thresholds and adverse-event profiles.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The open-label active comparison, differences in trial regimens and discontinuation rules belong in the interpretation. This does not establish a universal ranking across every population or formulation. Pharmaceutical trial results should not be assigned to laboratory catalog materials.
