What was studied?
The study randomized 3,297 people with type 2 diabetes to semaglutide or placebo on top of standard care for 104 weeks. Most had established cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease or both. The primary endpoint combined cardiovascular death, nonfatal infarction and nonfatal stroke.
What did the researchers report?
The composite occurred less often in the semaglutide group, and the result met the prespecified noninferiority criterion. The publication contributed evidence about cardiovascular outcomes in a high-risk diabetes population.
What are the limits?
Noninferiority testing, the composite components and population risk must be considered together. A favorable composite is not automatic proof of lower mortality alone. These results differ from SELECT, which studied a population without diabetes, and cannot establish properties of catalog materials.
