Semax in rat ischemia: immune and vascular gene-expression patterns

A genome-wide analysis explored transcription after experimental focal ischemia.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Rat brain cortex was analyzed after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion. Investigators compared ischemic animals exposed to Semax with an ischemia group at two early time points, focusing on transcriptome changes.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The authors reported altered expression of immune-related and vascular-related genes. Immune-response genes formed a large part of the changed set, and the affected genes and their timing differed between measurements.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

Gene expression is a mechanistic endpoint, not proof of restored neurological function in humans. The permanent-occlusion rat model captures only selected aspects of brain injury. A changed transcript can reflect several biological processes and requires functional follow-up.
