TRACE: thymosin alpha 1 did not significantly reduce infected pancreatic necrosis

A controlled trial tested a specific complication, rather than a broad immune-health claim.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Investigators randomized 508 patients with predicted severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis to thymosin alpha 1 or placebo. Most required intensive care. The main outcome was infected pancreatic necrosis during the index admission.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The complication occurred in 15.7% of the active-treatment group and 18.1% of the placebo group. The difference was not statistically significant, and major secondary complications did not show a clear group difference.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

This negative primary result should remain visible when evaluating the research record. It concerns a defined, severely ill hospital population, not healthy users. Neither the numerical difference nor a mechanistic rationale establishes a clinical benefit.
