SURMOUNT-OSA: sleep-disordered breathing as a trial endpoint

Two trials examined sleep-apnea measurements in adults with obesity.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

The trials enrolled adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea and obesity. One studied participants without positive airway pressure at baseline; the other included participants receiving it.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

At 52 weeks, tirzepatide groups had larger reductions in the apnea-hypopnea index than placebo groups, alongside changes in weight and other measures. Gastrointestinal adverse events were common.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

These selected populations and monitored conditions matter. The findings are not instructions to stop an existing sleep-apnea treatment and do not establish effects in people without obesity.
