SELECT: cardiovascular outcomes in a specific high-risk population

SELECT studied cardiovascular events, rather than weight change alone.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

This randomized trial enrolled 17,604 adults aged at least 45 with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, but no history of diabetes.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The composite cardiovascular endpoint occurred in 6.5% of the semaglutide group and 8.0% of the placebo group during follow-up. Adverse events leading to permanent treatment discontinuation were more frequent with semaglutide.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

These findings concern secondary prevention in an already high-risk population. They should not be generalized to healthy people, all cardiovascular conditions or untested research materials.
