STEP 5: what two years of follow-up adds

Longer follow-up examines maintenance during ongoing treatment, rather than permanence after stopping.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

STEP 5 randomized 304 adults with obesity or overweight and a related condition, without diabetes. Both groups received behavioral intervention for 104 weeks.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Average weight reduction remained greater with semaglutide than placebo at two years. Gastrointestinal adverse events were more frequent in the semaglutide group.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

This is evidence during continued treatment and follow-up, not evidence that the change remains after withdrawal. Most participants were White and female, which is relevant when considering how broadly results apply.
