After STEP 1: what happened following withdrawal?

The extension study highlights why an end-of-treatment result is not a permanent-outcome guarantee.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

An exploratory extension followed 327 participants from STEP 1 for a year after both study treatment and lifestyle intervention ended.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Participants previously assigned semaglutide regained about two-thirds of their earlier weight loss on average. Many cardiometabolic measurements moved back toward their starting values.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The extension involved a subset of the original trial and was exploratory. Because drug treatment and lifestyle support stopped together, it cannot fully isolate their separate effects. It does not prescribe a treatment plan.
