Tesamorelin and liver fat: a trial in people living with HIV

A liver-fat endpoint was examined in a narrowly defined clinical population.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

This randomized trial studied people with HIV and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The primary comparison assessed liver fat after 12 months of tesamorelin or placebo.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The tesamorelin group had a greater reduction in measured liver fat. Localized administration-site complaints were more common, while measured glucose changes did not differ between groups at 12 months.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

This small study does not establish long-term liver outcomes or applicability to everyone with fatty liver. A change in liver fat is not equivalent to proof of preventing cirrhosis or other clinical complications.
