Tesamorelin: distinguishing visceral fat from liver fat

A preliminary trial measured two different fat compartments in adults with HIV.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

The study randomized 50 adults receiving HIV therapy who had abdominal fat accumulation. It compared tesamorelin with placebo over six months.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Visceral fat decreased and liver fat showed a modest reduction with tesamorelin relative to placebo. Early fasting-glucose changes were also observed, underlining the value of safety monitoring.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The authors described the study as preliminary. Its size, duration and HIV-specific population limit broader conclusions, and changes in imaging measurements do not alone establish long-term health benefits.
