SUMMIT: reading a composite heart-failure endpoint

The trial studied people with obesity and HFpEF, using clinical events and health-status measures.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

An international randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 731 participants with obesity and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. It assessed a composite of cardiovascular death or worsening heart failure and changes in a health-status score.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Tirzepatide reduced the reported risk of the composite endpoint and improved health status compared with placebo. Adverse events leading to discontinuation, mainly gastrointestinal, were more frequent in the active-treatment group.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

A composite endpoint must be interpreted by considering its individual components; it is not automatically proof of a mortality benefit alone. The study population had defined heart failure and obesity. Its pharmaceutical formulation and monitored care cannot be equated with catalog materials.
