SURMOUNT-1: interpreting the first obesity trial

A large randomized trial examined tirzepatide in adults with obesity or overweight without diabetes.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

SURMOUNT-1 assigned 2,539 adults to tirzepatide study groups or placebo for 72 weeks. Participants had obesity, or overweight with a weight-related complication, and did not have diabetes.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Average weight reduction was greater in the tirzepatide groups than with placebo. Gastrointestinal events were the most common adverse effects; some participants stopped treatment because of adverse events.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The findings apply to the studied pharmaceutical regimens and eligibility criteria. They do not establish universal outcomes, indefinite durability or equivalence between a clinical study product and catalog materials.
