GROW: oral glutathione did not improve the investigated growth outcomes

The pediatric trial provides a negative result that should remain part of the evidence record.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

A multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 study investigated oral glutathione in young children with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic insufficiency. The main endpoint was change in weight-for-age score over 24 weeks.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The reported analysis found no significant group differences in the primary growth score, absolute weight or BMI changes. Other investigated clinical and inflammatory endpoints also did not show significant differences.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

The findings concern a specific pediatric disease population and oral formulation. They do not establish benefit in other populations, but they also should not be omitted in favor of favorable biomarker studies. This report is not guidance for children or evidence about other administration routes.
