Glutathione in healthy volunteers: unchanged oxidative-stress biomarkers

A four-week controlled study did not show the expected antioxidant biomarker changes.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Forty healthy adult volunteers entered a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral glutathione. The investigators measured urinary oxidative-stress markers and several erythrocyte glutathione measurements; 39 participants completed the per-protocol study.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The groups did not show significant differences in the principal oxidative-stress biomarkers at four weeks. Total reduced and oxidized glutathione measurements and their ratio were also unchanged in the reported analysis.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

Biomarker selection, duration and baseline health can influence results, but these factors do not justify treating a null outcome as proof of benefit. This study differs from the longer body-store trial already in the library and does not establish effects of catalog vials or other formulations.
