Glutathione and insulin sensitivity: a small trial with mixed biomarker results

The short study separated a clamp-based metabolic result from unchanged oxidative-stress measures.

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Twenty men with obesity, including participants with type 2 diabetes, entered a randomized, double-blind comparison of oral glutathione and placebo. Investigators used an insulin-sensitivity clamp, muscle sampling and oxidative-stress measurements.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Insulin sensitivity increased in the glutathione group, but the measured mitochondrial hydrogen-peroxide emission and several oxidative-damage markers did not show corresponding intervention effects. The findings were not uniformly positive across endpoints.

03 / INTERPRETATION

What are the limits?

This small, three-week study cannot establish durable diabetes outcomes or general clinical effectiveness. Oral supplementation is distinct from other formulations and routes. Multiple endpoints, limited participants and short follow-up should remain visible when interpreting the result.
